The Deutsches Museum is one of the best technical Museums in the world. I walked around their hall of motors and also their WW1 stuff and wondered how the heck we won the war.

I think we won the war because Adolph Hitler was verrückt.

To my eye, t he WW1 aircraft and zeppelin materials were very sophisticated. The workmanship on the duraluminum airframes was magnificent.

The British had some pretty high-quality engineering going on during WWII as well. Merlin engine... (They still think they’re the stuff...)

British industry seemed pretty much even with the best of the world, until sometime in the 1950s (aircraft, shipbuilding, computers, motorcycles, cars) , when their major companies seem like they started to loose their edge for some reason. At one point, around 1949,  the fastest airliner, train, car, ship, and motorcycle in the world were all simultaneously British.

I was active Army from ‘84-90 and toward the end of that period, I spent some time with some British soldiers who were certain that anything automotive that came out of England was superior to anything else. For example: one of the guys drove a Vauxhall sedan and I asked, “Isn’t that just a GM sedan?” His reply, “Yes, but of course it runs better.”

Well, I guess it would depend on the particular Vauxhall sedan .

But, that was well into the period when they were losing their identity to Opel.

Lack of money after the war would be the main reason I'd guess
